Katy Perry to earn $25 million as ‘American Idol’ judge

Not Released (NR)

Katy Perry's got millions of new reasons to sing all the way to the bank — because she's taking home a massive paycheck for "American Idol."

The "Firework" singer is set to earn $25 million from ABC as a judge on the recently revived reality singing competition, TMZ reported.

Executives at ABC — which won a bidding war earlier this month to bring back "American Idol" — wanted to secure a big-name personality for the show ahead of last week's upfront presentations.

"Katy had all the leverage. If ABC ended up announcing the show without a judge, they'd be screwed," a source familiar with the situation told TMZ.

The producers behind "American Idol" had previously tried to bring Perry on as a judge in 2012, when the series still aired on Fox, but Perry turned down a $20 million offer, according to the gossip website.

Her new deal far surpasses the one Jennifer Lopez landed in the past — with the former popstar host reportedly earning $15 million. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest, who also earned as much as $15 million during his tenure, is "on the verge" of signing on to return to the show, according to TMZ.

Perry, 32, was officially announced as the first judge for ABC's version of "American Idol" early last week.

"I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories," the singer said in a statement.

ABC had originally tried to enlist Kelly Clarkson — who won the very first season of "American Idol" — to judge the returning show, but she ended up joining rival network NBC's singing contest "The Voice" instead.

Another "Idol" alum, Jennifer Hudson, recently signed on for "The Voice" as well.

“American Idol” aired for 15 seasons from 2002-16 from Fox, with the final year being billed as the show’s farewell season.

Perry's decision to join ABC comes several years after her longtime rumored nemesis Taylor Swift took part in multiple commitments with the network, including unveiling both the title and artwork for her massively popular "1989" album during an event for ABC and Yahoo.

Perry is set to release her latest album "Witness" on June 9, but dropped a single called "Swish Swish" last week that some fans interpreted as a diss track against Swift.
